Preparations for puja in your home, before the pundit ji arrives

  1. Open all items bought from shops and wash those like paan leaves, supari (betel nut), flowers, fruits etc.
  2. Prepare five or six diyas (deepaks - little lamps made out of cotton wool and ghee).

  3. Prepare panchamrit - in one stainless glass, fill up with 3/4 milk, one teaspoon each of honey, yoghurt, brown sugar or gudra (jaggery) and ghee. Stir to mix properly.

  4. Wash 1/2 kilo of rice and dry (in sun preferably if not practical then in microwave, gently)

  5. Mix havan ingredients in one large bowl -
    • samagari
    • handful of gudr/jaggery/brown sugar
    • handful of black and white til
    • some lawang/elaichi (cardoman/cloves)

  6. Prepare a puja vedhi/aasan - i.e. resting place for all Devi/Devta murtis. The vedhi should preferably be between 15cm-30cm high and around a metre long. If no suitable table or aasan is available, please use garden bricks and a board.

The Puja Vedhi Should Be Facing East.

  7. Have the following items ready:
    • bed sheets/mats/cushions for seating pundit, yajman (yourself) and guests
    • one jug of water, four of five empty glasses - preferably stainless
    • Five average size katoras - preferably stainless; Five tablespoons - preferably stainless.

Reminders For Puja

On the day of the puja, Yajmans should fast (ideally on water, milk and friuts)

until the puja/havan is held.

If you are preparing food/maha prasad for offering to the Gods and or for the

Pandit, please ensure it does not contain any garlic, onions and eggplant.

It is generally preferred for Yajmans to prepare food at home rather than buying

from shops, as there would be no guarantee prasad bought from shops would be

cooked by someone who is clean (off meat, not menstruating).

Prasad prepared for offering should be done straight after your shower.

General Cleaniness - It is generally recommended that yajmans (those sitting for

the puja) to derive maximum benefit out of pujas conducted by pundits, they

should stay vegetarian for at least 21 days prior. Some devotees choose to stay

at least 7 days or even 3 days clean - it depends the level of each person's

Bhakt/devotion.

Ladies should be free from menstruation for at least seven days to sit as yajmans

for the puja.
